My Story…

Growing up, I witnessed my Mom and Aunt Betty beat breast cancer…twice each…Therefore, I was not at all surprised by my breast cancer diagnosis in June 2024. Yes, my Aunt Genevieve, who died of metastatic cancer in early 80s, and Aunt Mary, who recently died from ovarian cancer, entered my thoughts occasionally. However, I caught it early and felt confident that I would follow the path of Mom and Betty.

I underwent a double mastectomy with a little bit of shock that it was in one node, but I was technically “no evidence disease” after surgery in July 2024. I did chemo and radiation to cut down the chances of recurrence, and thought my cancer era was complete.

In April 2026, I noticed some shortness of breath. I was on tomoxifin and Verzinio, again to cut down risk of recurrence, and my doc mentioned that the Verzinio could cause some lung inflammation. I thought it was the extra weight I gained from being knocked into menopause by chemo but better to be safe than sorry.

I underwent a CT on a Tuesday in April 2026, and noticed my test result had uploaded to my portal around 6:45 Thursday evening. “Bone lesion at T-10”,  “lung nodules”, and “suspicious for metastatic disease” jumped off the screen.

I’m slowly but surely “accepting” my diagnosis - stage IV metastatic breast cancer. I’m still pissed, annoyed, sad, and so very scared. I’ve quickly realized that meeting and learning from fellow Stage IV Thrivers will be necessary as I navigate this diagnosis.

A Thriver who does an incredible job educating posted about the walk. I  decided that putting together a team and raising money for research is a way for me to take back some power from this crappy diagnosis. The more medications research discovers to fight the cancer mutations, the longer I live. It’s pretty much that simple. Ideally, my Luci and nieces and nephews will know a world with a cure.

Who wants to join me? Please join Cori’s Pink Pony Club if you would like to join my team. Road Trip to Jackson NJ!!! Of course, we will gladly accept any donation, no matter how big or small. I am surrounded by so much love and support and right now, prayers and funding toward research  would help me the most. Love you all and thanks for taking the time to read my story, join my team, make a donation and/or say a prayer.

ABOUT METASTATIC BREAST CANCER

Metastatic breast cancer (MBC) is stage 4 breast cancer, for which there is no cure. Globally, more than 670,000 people die each year from MBC, with more than 43,000 dying each year in the U.S. alone (117 per day). Metastatic breast cancer spreads mostly to the bones, liver, lungs, and brain, causing MBC patients to be in treatment for the rest of their lives—with only 31 percent of MBC patients in the U.S. living longer than five years. Approximately 30 percent of early-stage breast cancers recur as stage 4 MBC. While 98 percent of all breast-cancer-related deaths are from MBC, less than 13 percent of overall breast-cancer funding is currently allocated to researching metastatic breast cancer.

METAvivor has been able to award over $41 million to fund 230 MBC research grants. We are extremely passionate about raising money for this cause and truly thank you for helping save lives by participating in or fundraising for this event.

WHAT IS #LightUpMBC?

#LightUpMBC is the world's largest visual representation of awareness for Metastatic Breast Cancer and largest fundraising campaign for METAvivor. The global campaign partners with over 300 landmarks across every U.S. State and many countries around the world to illuminate in the MBC awareness colors of pink, teal and green on October 13th, MBC Awareness Day. That evening, #LightUpMBC Live is a dynamic virtual event that serves as the centerpiece of the #LightUpMBC campaign, bringing together the metastatic breast cancer (MBC) community and its supporters for an evening of storytelling, inspiration, and impact. This live-streamed program features powerful stories from MBC patients and their families, musical performances, and appearances by special guests who amplify the mission of raising awareness and funds for MBC research. For more info on how to watch, get involved, or view the list of participating landmarks, please visit www.LightUpMBC.org
